Moving Messages: Websites and Social Media

New’ or ‘social’ media is changing the way that community organizations interface with their members, governments and the general public. Integrating these tools into existing communications strategies can open new possibilities to: a) reach a broader audience; and b) enable more participatory (multi-way) forms of communication. This workshop will discuss and demonstrate the use of various new media tools including websites, blogs, facebook, twitter, google analytics, NING networks and youtube. We will discuss methods that integrate these tools and offer practical tips that organizations can use to nurture their new media strategies. The workshop will close with a hands-on build of a WordPress.com website/blog. WordPress is a free and accessible tool that organizations, activists and community organizers can use as a blog, an organizational website or to launch a secondary website(s) to advance personal or organizational campaigns.
