Documentary Video Work
Recent attention in the media on the global food crisis has focused the public eye on the many problems created by the conventional way our food travels from farm to fork. At the same time, a growing number of alternative food initiatives are emerging across Canada that are enabling citizens to test local solutions to a global set of problems. This summer, Colin Anderson will be traveling across Western Canada, documenting and evaluating these local alternative food systems and initiatives. This action research project will follow the stories of those on the forefront of change, engaged in alternative methods of producing, marketing and organizing the food system. We will be interviewing farmers, farm leaders and community organizers to gain a better understanding of the role of grass-roots alternative food networks in facilitating urban-rural connections, rural renewal and food security. Interviews will be video recorded and developed into a 45 minute documentary film as well as conventional academic outcomes. The film will be edited by a collection of urban and rural members of the Harvest Moon Society including Stephane McLachlan, Clint and Pam Cavers and Ian Mauro. Please feel free to contact Colin if you have questions or suggestions.
